More than one million children of key workers live in poverty

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has revealed that over one million children of key workers live in poverty. The TUC has blamed this on low pay, poor contracts and a high cost of living for workers in Britain. Employment even for key workers throughout the pandemic have proven to be insecure and of poor quality. In England, Scotland and Wales this reality is faced by one in five children of key workers. The worst affected region according to the report is the North East where the figure increases to as many as one in three.

Some have questioned China’s commitment to a system that has brought such rapid change to what was one of the poorest countries in the world only a few generations ago. However, China’s recent completion of its grand long-term aim to abolish absolute poverty should show the millions of people who make up the CPC take this task seriously.

MPs approve controversial foreign aid cut

Today (Tuesday 13 July), the House of Commons approved the Tory government’s planned cuts to foreign aid. The cuts from 0.7% to 0.5% of the budget will see a reduction of around £4 billion, with the government justifying the decrease by blaming the pandemic.

Universal Credit £20 uplift to end

At the end of September, the Covid Universal Credit boost of £20 a week will be removed. Confirmed by work and pensions secretary Thérèse Coffey, the Tories have been undeterred by pervasive public and cross-party opposition to the move. 

WFDY: Solidarity with Cuba! End the blockade!

The World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) has issued a statement and call for solidarity against the ongoing attempts by the United States to destabilise Cuba and an end to the criminal blockade which has sought to starve the Cuban people into submission for over six decades.

WFDY opposes anti-communism and the indirect ban against German Communists

The World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) has released a statement condemning developments in Germany where there is an anti-communist effort by the state to ban by the backdoor the Germany Communist Party (DKP) and its youth organisation, the Socialist German Workers Youth (SDAJ), a fellow member of WFDY.

Leiston and Aldeburgh – Communists staying on the campaign trail

Steve Marsling, Communist Party candidate for the Leiston and Aldeburgh by election, polled 61 votes on a poor 27% turnout. The poll proved a shock for the Conservatives as the Greens topped the poll in this massive true blue area. Steve polled 20% of the Labour vote and 1.25% of the total vote. At the three hustings that were held it was agreed by all parties that the Communist candidate was the most powerful and passionate speaker. So much so that the victorious Greens asked to work with Steve in future campaigns.

President of Haiti assassinated

A group of armed men have assassinated the President of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, and seriously harmed his wife in their home, according to an announcement by Haiti’s interim prime minister, Claude Joseph. Joseph said the murder was carried out by an “armed commando group” that included foreigners, whilst speaking on a local radio station.

The British Medical Association consider industrial action

If the Tory government doesn’t increase a 1% pay offer, senior doctors in England may refuse to do overtime. Due to a pay offer that the NHS workforce have labelled as a “slap in the face”, the threat of industrial action has developed following the Royal College of Nursing’s announcement that it would contemplate balloting for industrial action. 

Communist Party calls to ‘Save NHS from profiteers’

On the 73rd anniversary of the launch of the NHS, Britain’s Communist Party launched a stinging attack on the “creeping privatisation” of the service.  Speaking at the Party’s Executive Committee on 4 July – the day before NHS vesting day – General Secretary Robert Griffiths accused Boris Johnson’s Conservative government of “accelerating the sell-out of Aneurin Bevan and Labour’s greatest living achievement”. 

Crimea coastline provocation

On the 23rd of June, the British ‘HMS Defender’ warship was followed by several Russian fighter jets after it sailed within 12 miles of Crimea’s coastline.
