Bolivia elections delayed until September 2020

Bolivia’s Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) announced yesterday (2 June 2020) that the country’s next elections to the Legislative Assembly and the Presidency will be postponed until September. The election was originally due to take place on 3 May 2020 but was postponed indefinitely in March as Bolvia grappled with the COVID-19 lockdown.

UK Statistics Authority calls out Tories for misleading COVID-19 testing figures

Tory Health Secretary Matt Hancock received scathing of criticism of official government figures in a letter published today (2 June 2020) from Mr David Norgrove chairman of the UK Statistics Authority (UKSA).

The watchdog’s response to government publication of official data on COVID-19 tests in England described the figures as of “limited value” and called out that the “aim seems to be to show the largest possible number of tests, even at the expense of understanding”.

Nobel Peace Prize proposal for Cuban doctors gains momentum

More than 40 European organisations are backing a proposal to award the Nobel Peace Prize to Cuban medical brigades of the Henry Reeve Contingent, for their contribution to the global battle against COVID-19.

Launched April 28 by the associations Cuba Linda and France Cuba, the initiative has thus far received the support of solidarity groups, political organizations and unions in France, Spain, Ireland and Italy, and thousands of Internet users on the Facebook page “Prix Nobel de la paix pour les brigades médicales cubaines Henry Reeve.”

Venezuela demands release of gold kept by Bank Of England to help fight COVID-19

Venezuela’s Central Bank (BCV) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) agreed to use part of the country $1.02 billion with of gold deposited in the Bank of England to acquire food and medicine to face the Covid-19 pandemic, BCV President Calixto Ortega declared on Wednesday (27 May 2020).

The Latin American country and United Nations will seek to release the gold held by the Bank of England with Venezuelan authorities appearing at an expedited court hearing in London today (28 May 2020).
