Over 600,000 workers lose jobs between March & May

Office for National Statistics (ONS) statistics released today revealed the dire states of Britain’s economy in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and Tory mismanagement.

According to to the ONS, the UK’s national statistical institute, early indicators for May 2020 show that the number of employees in the UK on payrolls has fallen sharply by well over 600,000 compared with March.

Following the toppling of a statue of Edward Coulston, a notorious slave trader, in Bristol on Sunday (7 June 2020) by protesters involved in Black Lives Matter demonstrations, there has been a general backlash in the mainstream and right wing media. Coulston was responsible for forcibly transporting at least 80,000 slaves to the Americas, with tens of thousands dying in the process.

She pointed to recent examples of the deaths and serious injuries of black detainees in police custody in Britain, the US and France which, she suggested, were also related to the use of dangerous restraint techniques that were used disproportionately against black and working-class people.

Demonstrations in London yesterday (6 June 2020) in support of US protests following the murder of George Floyd were the scene of heavy handed policing which resulted in clashes with anti-racism protesters and mounted police charging crowds.

UK Statistics Authority calls out Tories for misleading COVID-19 testing figures

Tory Health Secretary Matt Hancock received scathing of criticism of official government figures in a letter published today (2 June 2020) from Mr David Norgrove chairman of the UK Statistics Authority (UKSA).

The watchdog’s response to government publication of official data on COVID-19 tests in England described the figures as of “limited value” and called out that the “aim seems to be to show the largest possible number of tests, even at the expense of understanding”.
