Police shooting of an unarmed man in Albania has sparked huge protests across the country, with protesters being attacked with tear gas and several protest leaders being arrested for breaching Covid related lockdown rules that limit public gatherings to less than ten people.

Interior Minister Sander Lleshaj resigned after the murder, saying that he resigned because “as a human being and as a parent who modestly shares the pain”.

Prime Minister Edi Rama apologised for the killing to the nation, calling it “inexplicable and completely unreasonable.” However, these empty words will be of little consolation to the friends and family of the murdered 25 year old.

Protests are likely to continue despite the crackdown, with many Albanian workers more than ready to fight against what many have described as an authoritarian and corrupt state.
